Florida’s food scene continues to flourish with 14 new spots being highlighted in March’s new additions to the Michelin Guide which was announced on Wednesday. Six of those spots go to eateries in Central Florida.
The City Beautiful and Winter Park seem to have a knack for all things Asian cuisine and barbecue, so let’s take a look at who received the prestigious Michelin nod.
Bánh Mì Boy
Located inside Mills Market, this Vietnamese Cafe and Bakery serves up Vietnamese favorites such as summer rolls, Saigon street wings, and of course bánh mì. A bánh mì is a French baguette sandwich filled with meat, vegetables, and house pate. They have even put their own twist on this classic meal offering flavors like pho French dip bánh mì giving customers a fusion of flavors.
Before being recognized in the Michelin Guide, they were also featured on season 7 of Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil and have served the Central Florida community for over 20 years.
Gyukatsu Rose
Chef Sean ‘Sonny’ Nguyen gets to add another Michelin Guide praise to his portfolio with Gyukatsu Rose gaining recognition this month. He is also a part of Tori Tori, Domu, and Rion’s Ocean Room which has been mentioned in previous Guides. Gyukatsu Rose specializes in gyukatsu, or Japanese breaded beef cutlets, and gives the power to customers to sear their lightly seasoned meat on a stone grill. This food stall is located in the East End Market and it is recommended to make reservations before going.
Kai Kai
Also located in Mills Market, Kai Kai is led by husband and wife duo, Jerry and Jackie who brought NYC’s Chinatown to Orlando, as mentioned on their website. With a focus on Cantonese flavors, the couple specializes in roast duck, crispy pork, as well as an extensive selection of handmade dim sum.
Smokemade Meats + Eats
Moving away from Asian cuisine, Smokemade Meats + Eats just off Curry Ford Road offers a classic all-wood smoked barbecue experience. Owner and pitmaster Tyler Brunache brought his passion of “low and slow” Central Texas-style barbecue to Orlando first through pop-ups and markets and now in his restaurant. The menu has staples like brisket, pulled pork, and jalapeño-cheddar sausage coupled with sides such as garlic collard greens and mac & cheese. The Guide says it “gives Texas a run for its money.
Walala Hand-Pulled Noodle House
Walala Hand-Pulled Noodle House, located in Pine Hills’ Chinatown is dedicated to serving authentic and traditional Chinese cuisine, as per their website. While their focus is on Lanzhou-style hand-pulled noodles, their menu also features pan-fried dumplings, buns, and fried rice.
Bar Kada
As mentioned on their website, Bar Kada sees itself as “a place to gather, explore, and enjoy.” This sake bar located in Winter Park offers Japanese flavors with sushi, small plates, and noodles alongside their sake pairings.
Central Florida upholds its reputation as a hub for hospitality and cultural cuisine, now having a total of 58 Michelin Guide recognitions. Next month, the Michelin Guide Florida 2024 Ceremony will be held in Orlando.
