In honor of National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, many public health centers are offering free resources to keep the community safe.

The Twiggs County Health Department in Jeffersonville was no exception.

Running today from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event offered free HIV testing, community resources, and even free giveaways.

"We now have come a long way since HIV was first detected and we have a lot of medicines that can get you to a level where your body can handle it a lot better and also it can become non-detectable," said Nurse Manager for the Twiggs County Health Department Ashley Boatright. "Getting tested regularly, especially if you're having unprotected sex or change in partners frequently, allows us to catch it as quickly as possible."

This year's theme is "Hope, Health, and Healing," along with overcoming barriers of entry for women at risk of living with the disease.
