Lawsuits steal spotlight in Democratic race for Florida attorney general
Dueling lawsuits are drawing the political spotlight to the Democratic primary race for Florida attorney general.
Tampa attorney Ryan Torrens is running against lawmaker, State Rep. Sean Shaw, the son of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Leander Shaw.
Shaw said he's frustrated by Republican leadership. He believes he can address consumer protection, the opioid crisis, and gun violence more effectively as Attorney General.
His opponent is Ryan Torrens, an attorney who defends people in foreclosures and bank disputes.
“I think we need to have an attorney general who has that type of experience actually fighting for people, instead of just pretending like they are going to do so,” Torrens said.
In late July, Shaw sued Torrens in Leon County Circuit Court claiming he accepted an illegal contribution of $4,000, exceeding campaign fundraising limits. The suit claims he would have otherwise not been able to cover the amount of his qualifying check.
Torrens has now filed a counterclaim, saying there was "no fraudulent conduct," and is suing Shaw for Libel.
Torrens explained in a letter to the state division of elections that he issued a refund to the donor.
WESH 2 News reached out to both candidates for comment on the lawsuits.
"The frivolous lawsuit by my opponent is just a sad attempt to confuse voters during a primary election after absentee ballots have already been sent out," Torrens said.
Shaw’s campaign did not comment.
A judge has made no decision on either of these lawsuits and, right now, Ryan Torrens' name is on the ballots that are being provided to Democratic voters.
