A female Jewish editor is now leading the staff of National Geographic magazine for the first time ever.
Susan Goldberg, 58, dedicated the April issue to the subject of race, with the opening words: “For decades, our coverage was racist … to rise above our past, we must acknowledge it.”

In the Editor’s Note, Goldberg observed that she herself is a member of two groups that also once faced discrimination at the magazine she leads today. She’s National Geographic’s 10th editor since its founding in 1888.
