Highlights

  • El Salvador´s Country Strategic Plan was among the eight first plans approved by the February Executive Board. The strategy proposes a 5-years plan to support the Government in improving food security and nutrition in El Salvador.

  • The “Regional Conference on Nutrition and Social Development Policies for Central America and the Caribbean” was held in San Salvador to exchange ideas on nutrition strategies and establish strategic alliances.

  • 2017 operational plan for Nutrimos El Salvador plan was approved by the Ministry of Health.

Operational Updates

  • The Country Strategic Plan was approved by the Executive Board in the 2017 February meeting. The approved strategy proposes a 5-years plan to support the Government in improving food security and nutrition in El Salvador. The implementation will start in April 2017 and will focus on 5 areas: (1) emergency preparedness and response; (2) social protection; (3) smallholder farmers’ access to market; (4) resilience and climate change adaptation; (5) institutional capacity.

  • The “Regional Conference on Nutrition and Social Development Policies for Central America and the Caribbean” was held in San Salvador with representatives from El Salvador, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. It provided a space for discussion between different sectors (public, private, academic, civil society and international cooperation) and for the creation of strategic alliances to improve nutrition.

  • The first nutrition forum between the Government of El Salvador and the private sector was facilitated by WFP, to identify possible joint actions to enhance nutrition habits in the country.

  • “Nutrimos El Salvador” operational plan was approved by the Ministry of Health. The project will start in March with 10,111 participants in 25 municipalities.

  • WFP and the Ministry of Agriculture trained farmer organizations involved in the PROFARMERS project, to access government´s procurement platform “COMPRASAL”.

  • Under the development project, the plan for the construction of a logistics center for storage and distribution was finalized. The center will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the community stores managed by the NGO COMUS.
