Highlights

  • Food deliveries to schools are underway. WFP will only be able to provide school meals to 101,279 children for 26 days instead of a trimester.

  • In the framework of the "Innovations from the field: Gender Mainstreaming from the ground up" project WFP conducted a baseline survey on nutritional status among children aged 6 to 59 months and pregnant and nursing women in two villages of Karimama.

  • From January 2017 onwards, the Country Programme will experience severe funding constraints.

Operational Updates

  • Food distribution has started since 19 January 2017 to assist 101,279 children in 562 schools. The available tonnage will cover only 26 days of the first trimester of 2017. The food distribution is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

  • Due to scarce funding the country office is not able to implement the activities related to nutrition and resilience.

Partnerships

WFP is partnering with the the Institute of Development Studies (IDS, United Kingdom) to boost gender mainstreaming from the field. In this context, WFP conducted a survey to determine the nutritional status of children aged 6-59 months and pregnant women in Karimama district. These nutrition-sensitive activities were carried out with men's participation at the community level. Some 61 households were investigated with the aim of establishing a baseline data for the "Innovations from the field: Gender Mainstreaming from the ground up" project with a true engagement from men in health and nutrition activities.
