Highlights

  • In Mindanao, 121,500 people were provided with food and cash assistance to improve their food security.

  • Due to a severe funding shortfall, nutrition and cash-based activities will be severely disrupted in the next 12 months.

Operational Updates

  • In September, WFP extended food and cash assistance to 121,500 individuals in central Mindanao to enhance their resilience from the adverse effects of natural and man-made disasters. Under the stunting prevention programme, 9,600 pregnant and nursing women and 12,200 children aged 6-23 months were supported with special nutrition products while, 62,500 schoolchildren were supported through the school meals programme in 267 primary schools.

  • Food-assistance-for-assets through cash-based transfers were carried out in nine municipalities in central Mindanao. A total of USD 532,851 was disbursed to 6,184 families or 37,104 persons. Out of the total targeted number of households and cash to be disbursed throughout September, 99 percent have received cash assistance while 22 percent are yet to receive their cash assistance.

  • Locally-produced ready-to-eat complementary food (RUCF) for children 6 to 36 months funded by WFP and developed by Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Momsie, will undergo enhancement to make it comparable to the Lipid Nutrient Supplement (LNS) for stunting prevention. WFP is providing technical assistance to the technology adaptor to improve the quality of the RUCF.

  • WFP took five donor agencies (from Canada,
    Australia, Singapore, Spain, and the Asian Development Bank) to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) National Resource Operations Centre (NROC) to showcase the mechanized production of Family Food Packs, which is a key component of WFP’s technical assistance to DSWD. WFP plans to organize similar field visits in the future to mobilize resources for Special Operations projects in the Visayas and Mindanao areas.

  • WFP supported the provincial government of Lanao del Sur in the conduct of Nutrition Summit and planning workshop to address maternal and child health and nutrition. This was initiated by the province which rank highest in the region in terms of stunting rate. The summit focused on the First 1000 days with the theme Governing the First 1000 days of a child: The Cradle of Good Nutrition. During the summit, WFP also handed over 85 height boards to support the existing stunting prevention programme.
